Marocco: lo scrittore Abdellah Taïa si dichiara gay
Per la prima volta in un paese arabo un personaggio pubblico, in questo caso uno scrittore, si dichiara pubblicamente gay. Eppur si muove verrebbe da pensare. In Francia, nel gennaio del 1972, lo scrittore Guy Hocquenghem aveva fatto lo stesso con una lettera pubblicata da Le Nouvel Observateur.
Recentemente la stampa marocchina affronta la questione omosessuale in maniera abbastanza positiva e rispettosa.

Islanda: eletta prima ministra lesbica
Jóhanna Sigurðardóttir è la nuova prima ministra islandese. A seguito delle recenti elezioni, svoltesi lo scorso 25 aprile, la Sigurðardóttir è stata eletta a capo di una coalizione di sinistra. La sua elezione è doppiamente storica. In primo luogo si tratta della prima volta che l'Islanda elegge una donna come suo leader; inoltre per la prima volta in tutto il mondo viene eletto un capo di stato dichiaratamente gay. La neoeletta leader non ha mai concesso interviste a proposito della sua sesssualità, ciononostante nella sua biografia si dice apertamente che la sua partner è la sceneggiatrice e giornalista Jónína Leósdóttir.
La prima ministra gode di grande popolarità avendo già ricoperto questa carica ad internim. Ciò che è importante notare è che gli elettori non le hanno certo tolto la fiducia per il fatto di essere una donna nè lei ha dovuto nascondere il fatto di essere gay.
"Johanna is a very private person," said an Icelandic government source. "A lot of people didn't even know she was gay. When they learn about it people tend to shrug and say, 'Oh'. That's not to say they are not interested; they are interested in who she's living with – but no more so than if she was a man living with a woman."
"In opinion polls Johanna has repeatedly been chosen as the most popular politician in Iceland," said the government source. "She is a good choice, because one of the problems the government is facing is lack of trust. Getting Johanna to become Prime Minister was a way of saying trust is an issue.

Regno Unito: Carol Ann Duffy prima donna e prima gay ad essere nominata Poet Laureate
Per la prima volta nella storia una donna ha ricevuto il titolo di Poet Laureate.
La poetessa Carol Ann Duffy è inoltre la prima persona dichiaratamente gay a ricevere tale onore.
Britain on Friday awarded the role of national poet laureate to Carol Ann Duffy — the first woman to hold a post that has been filled by William Wordsworth, Alfred Lord Tennyson and Ted Hughes.
Duffy is also the first openly gay laureate.
The laureate is officially appointed by the queen on the advice of the government. Prime Minister Gordon Brown called Duffy "a truly brilliant modern poet who has stretched our imaginations by putting the whole range of human experiences into lines that capture the emotions perfectly."
Duffy has published more than 30 books — plays and children's stories as well as poems that mix accessible modern language with traditional forms such as the sonnet. Her work often displays a sly, feminist take on history and contains a strong vein of social commentary.

E anche in questo caso lo stereotipo della lesbica brutta dai capelli rasati è nuovamente smentito. Un coming out fatto con naturalezza, col pensiero di come la visibilità di artista lesbica di successo possa essere come modello e conforto a chi, giovane o meno giovane, è gay e non ha modelli positivi non stereotipati di riferimento. BBC newsreader Jane Hill has outed herself as gay in the Corporation's in-house magazine.
The 40-year-old presenter revealed she was living with her partner Sara and their dog Mavis in an interview with Ariel.
The couple have been together for about a year.
'Everyone has known for years that Jane is gay,' a colleague said.
'She hasn't made a secret of it at the BBC and although she has had other girlfriends over the years, this one seems to be the one.'
Described by one male TV critic as 'severe but sexy,' Miss Hill is much admired for her presentational and reporting skills.

'But they came in, patted me on the back and said: "We don't care. Why didn't you tell us before?"
'Two of my best mates in rugby didn't even blink an eyelid. Martyn said he never had a clue, would never have thought it.
'I felt everyone was protecting me and closing in tight around me. No one distanced themselves from me, not one single person.'
Since that confession to his closest circle of friends three years ago, Gareth says his team-mates at his club, the Cardiff Blues, now know - and apparently don't care.
My parents, my family and my friends all love me and accept me for who I am, and even if the public are upset by this, I know the love of those people who mean the most to me will never change.'I'm not going on a crusade, but I'm proud of who I am. I feel I have achieved everything I could ever possibly have hoped to achieve out of rugby, and I did it being gay.

Assolutamente corretto il fatto che Irene voglia parlare dello sport e non della sua fidanzata. In ogni caso Irene è una grande atleta la cui vittoria dimostra l'impegno ed il sacrificio oltre, il che non guasta, ad essere una bella ragazza. Yes, Wüst came out in the interview, but I don’t think she regrets doing so, I believe she regrets the amount of attention that fact got instead of her high chances of winning medals opposite other favorites from the Czech Republic, Germany and Canada.
Then again, why should we have to think about the consequences when all someone does is mention you’re in a loving relationship with your partner? The only difference here is that this partner is of the same sex.

Gran Bretagna: il cantante Kele Okereke si dichiara gay
Le persone famose che rifiutano di parlare della propria vita privata considerando l'argomento non importante, come aveva fatto Kereke in un primo tempo, sono quasi sempre gay. Avete mai sentito una persona eterosessuale tacere riguardo alla propria vita privata? Si chiama doppio standard. Per questo congratulazioni al coraggioso Kele.
He added: “This interview is actually an important step in my relationship with my parents. The reason I’m doing it is whenever I go out , I’m always stopped by young, gay kids who say it’s really refreshing and encouraging to see someone like me being out in a relatively mainstream band.

Forse lo sapevate già. Quello che conta in questa storia è il coraggio e l'onestà di essere sè stessi, visibili come un libro aperto. Una questione che, ricordo per inciso, per le persone eterosessuali neanche si pone.

This is just what I need especially now that I am the father of two beautiful boys that are so full of light and who with their outlook teach me new things every day. To keep living as I did up until today would be to indirectly diminish the glow that my kids where born with. Enough is enough. This has to change. This was not supposed to happen 5 or 10 years ago, it is supposed to happen now. Today is my day, this is my time, and this is my moment.
These years in silence and reflection made me stronger and reminded me that acceptance has to come from within and that this kind of truth gives me the power to conquer emotions I didn't even know existed.
What will happen from now on? It doesn't matter. I can only focus on what's happening to me in this moment. The word "happiness" takes on a new meaning for me as of today. It has been a very intense process. Every word that I write in this letter is born out of love, acceptance, detachment and real contentment. Writing this is a solid step towards my inner peace and vital part of my evolution.
I am proud to say that I am a fortunate homosexual man. I am very blessed to be who I am.

Showtime is reviving "The L Word" -- but this time as a reality series.
Pay cabler has greenlit nine episodes of "The Real L Word: Los Angeles," from "L Word" creator Ilene Chaiken and reality producers Magical Elves ("Top Chef").
Show will follow six lesbians in Los Angeles as they go about their lives -- a lesbian answer to Bravo's "Real Housewives" franchise. Project is dependent on casting, the net said; if all goes as planned, "The Real L Word" would debut sometime next year.
"We love to tell authentic stories about complex characters and feel like this is an area that has yet to be explored in reality television," Lipsitz said.

I finally accepted my sexuality at the end of 2006 following a huge anxiety attack at work. After what were literally years of torment, denial and very, very dark times, I couldn't live a lie to myself any more.
My family, close friends and, of late, my current work colleagues have been very supportive. These people, possibly already suspecting ''what team I batted for'', were always protective. Their protection became even more apparent in social situations where I would notice them deflect negative comments away from me once I had actually told them I was gay.
Speculation, gossip, rumour and innuendo are common practice; we all do it, I know I have been guilty of it. Living the lie and deflecting the innuendo grows tiring. It is emotionally exhausting and it flat out hurts no matter how hard you try to block it out. I would be extremely well off if someone gave me 10 cents every time I heard the comment ''don't listen to it''. But, like the gossiping itself, it is almost impossible not to.
This year, more than I can remember in recent times, it seems as though there have been an influx of coming-out stories or gay points of conversation. For the people coming out it is no doubt a courageous step and I truly admire them and am inspired by their stories.
Despite the dark, fearful and lonely times, being able to write this fills me with a sense of freedom, pride and relief. There truly is a genuine sense that everything will be OK.
I wrestled for a long, long time wondering whether being gay made me a bad person, but I can no longer fight who I am and that, simply put, is just me. Daniel Kowalski.

So many thoughts ran through my head. Did I have something new to prove? What if I did not run well? Would my teammates attribute a bad race to my homosexuality? All of these questions raced rapidly through my head as others walked toward the starting line. But I couldn’t move. I was petrified. I glanced over at my coach.

During the summer between my freshman and sophomore years of college, I couldn’t take the lying and sleepless nights anymore.
My head coach, Willy Wood, quickly replied and asked if I would like to come into his office and talk about it. What started off as a silent, awkward conversation turned into daily long conversations about my life and how my family was handling me coming out. I would sit in his office for sometimes hours and discuss how I felt about being gay, and how I felt now that I was out.
Two athletes outside my team have helped me a lot along the way. Jamal Brown was an openly gay runner for Dartmouth College who was there for me during my really low points at Columbia. Jamal has always been a great source of advice, since he had been through everything I was currently going through. To personally know another openly gay athlete has helped me so much as I adapt to being my true self in this environment. And while Scott Herman is not a fellow runner, he is one of the people I look up to most today. He has inspired me to give it my all for my last semester at Columbia. I appreciate them both immensely.

Gay Israeli music star Yehonathan Gatro is starting to make a name for himself on the North American music scene, care of his steamy music videos and danceable tracks, which he now writes in English. Coming out to his fans by releasing a gay love song in 2006, he has since produced two full-length albums in English — to growing acclaim.
Yehonathan has been part of the Israeli music scene for 10 years now, and he has an interesting performance history. Many of his current North American fans don’t know that he used to be a teen heartthrob in a boy band called Five. As a closeted gay man, misrepresenting who he was for the throngs of adoring young girls eventually got to him. Pretending to be straight for the sake of a mainstream music career lost its appeal when he had to hide his grief over the end of an important relationship. He ran away to LA for a couple years and started on the path of coming out.
“I feel my work is much better now — more free and honest,” he says. “I do what I want to and that, to me, [is] the most important thing. I look at gay artists that are still in the closet, and I feel bad for them…especially because I feel their art is hurt by it.
“[Before I came out], I was so busy acting straight onstage, and that was very limiting for me as a performer. Now, I feel I can act as whatever — macho, feminine, gay, straight, you name it. I'm much more in tune with my personality and body, and I can display my range without worrying, ‘Oops! Was that hand wave too queer?’”
Part of Yehonathan’s growing popularity in North America has been due to his steamy videos, which often feature shirtless men making out, flirting and showing each other desire.But being this out has been quite a process for Yehonathan — part of which was a period of time serving in the Israeli army, strangely enough. He says the experience was life-changing for him.
“It was a deep and character-building experience for me, especially as a gay man enlisting [in] a very elite and demanding military unit like the Parashooters [a counter-terrorism unit modeled on the British SAS]. I had anxieties before being recruited that I [would] not make friends and that I [wouldn’t] measure up to my straight buddies in the unit, but I was very surprised to discover that I had one or two very butch bones in my body. I realized during my military service what a real man I am, regardless [of] being a gay one.”

“We’ve been given carte blanche,” Pieczonka says. “We wanted to keep it light and summery, so we chose things we felt suited us: The Lakmé flower duet from Madame Butterfly, Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffman, and a big scene from the opera Norma, which is a Bel Canto piece that neither of us have performed before. It’s a really great fiery scene.”
“It’s challenging, sure, and it’s also amazing,” says Tucker. “I’m inspired by Adrianne’s singing, I always have been. I’m blessed that I get to sing with her.”
The couple met in 2004, during the Canadian Opera Company’s production of Valkyrie. Pieczonka was singing the role of Sieglinde, while Tucker stormed the stage in an army of Valkyries. They were about halfway through the rehearsal process when love struck fast and furious.
“The violins were playing, I always say,” laughs Tucker. “We dated intensely. I was living in the States at the time and she was in England. I went over for a visit and that was it.”
They married in June of 2005, and welcomed daughter Grace a year later. Life is now a busy whirlwind of parenting, travel and work, but the women are ecstatic at the opportunity to share a stage singing the music they both love – even if Tucker remains a little star struck.
“It’s occasionally nerve-wracking,” she admits, “because I keep Adrianne on a pedestal a bit. But to stand next to your partner with whom you share your life, your voices and your bodies vibrating together — how much more intimate can you get outside of the bedroom?”

Thomas says he has had no problems in his other Super League games. Both Thomas and Nigel Owens, the Welsh referee who was previously rugby union's only high-profile gay figure, contemplated suicide before coming out.

Two-time Olympian Mark Tewksbury has been named Canada’s chef de mission for the London 2012 Games.
“I have the amazing honour and privilege of being the chef de mission,” Tewksbury announced on CTV's Canada AM Thursday morning.
“I got the news a little while ago and have been sitting tight on it until today, so finally I can talk.”
The chef de mission is selected by the Canadian Olympic Committee as the official representative and spokesperson of the Canadian Olympic Team.
Tewksbury, 42, competed in two Olympics before retiring from competition in 1992. At the 1988 games in Seoul he won a silver medal as part of Canada's relay team. In 1992, Tewksbury beat expectations to snatch Canada's first gold medal of the Barcelona games.
He has since been inducted into the Canadian Olympic Hall of Fame, the Canadian Sports Hall of Fame, and the International Swimming Hall of Fame.
His commitment to gays being allowed to compete without discrimination in sport has been a focal point of his post Olympic career. He was an executive of the Outgames held in Montreal.
In 2006, he published his second book, an autobiography entitled Inside Out: Straight Talk from a Gay Jock.

The 19-year-old X Factor winner made the brave decision to come out in an emotional interview with the Mirror, just a week after telling his mum.
Joe has always denied rumours he was gay, but insisted the reason was he didn’t know himself until recently.
He's been the subject of intense scrutiny over his sexuality ever since his sensational X Factor win.
And Joe McElderry has always insisted he was straight.
But the 19-year-old has now bravely decided to tell the world he is gay – and the denials were down to the fact he never knew himself, until three weeks ago.
And he said he is comfortable with his decision to come out publicly, declaring: “I’m happy. I now know who I am.”
Relaxing in the garden of his Central London flat, Joe said: “I’m so happy. It’s all been so recent to be honest. Over the past couple of weeks I’ve had time to think and come to realise who I am. I have grown up a lot.
“I’m not worried about how fans will react. They have always said they’ll back me no matter what. Everyone’s been really kind so I would like to thank them and your readers for all the support."
If Joe has any misconceptions being gay could affect his career, he only needs to look at Will Young. He came out in 2002 after winning Pop Idol and has gone from strength to strength.

On the speculation surrounding his sexuality: “If someone had said ’are you gay?’ I would have said yes, but no-one ever did. I’ve never felt the need to leap out of the closet singing and dancing about it. I’ve always known I was gay, from a very young age. I came out to my friends and my family at a very young age, so for me it’s always been my life and it’s never needed to be a huge change that I’ve had to tell everyone about.”
On coming out, he added: “If you are in the public eye I think people feel like they have a right to know, feel like they have a right to ask and that you should be completely open and honest about all these things. And I think it depends.”

Miller, 48, publicly came out of the closet on her nationally syndicated show, "The Stephanie Miller Show," on Friday.
