Usa: Melodia Women Choir

Canada: Sisters of Sheynville

The Sisters are a high-energy, all-female sextet that brings to life Yiddish swing, klezmer and roots music; inspired by the Barry Sisters of the 1930s-40s old time radio era. The band's original music and arrangements of both traditional and jazz material combine serious musicianship, complexity and intricate musical thought with a fun approach to performance.

For the first time in the world, a museum will be displaying the feminine side of its own collections. This new presentation of the Centre Pompidou's collections will be entirely given over to the women artists from the 20th century to the present day.

This will be the occasion for the institution, which has built up the very first collection of modern and contemporary art, to show its commitment to women artists, nationality and discipline taken together, and place them at the core of modern and contemporary art of the 20th and 21st centuries.

Key figures such as Sonia Delaunay, Frida Kahlo, Dorothea Tanning, Joan Mitchell and Maria-Elena Vieira da Silva rub shoulders with today's great female creators some of whom, including Sophie Calle, Annette Messager and Louise Bourgeois have been featured recently in monographic exhibitions at the Centre Pompidou.

The programming cuts across disciplines to take a deeper look at the place occupied by women in the culture of the last century, from literature to history of thought, from dance to cinema.

Usa: l'artista Andrea Arroyo rende omaggio alle donne vittime di violenza a Ciudad Juarez

Over 400 young women to date have been killed in the booming border town, home to dozens of corporations’ factories.  Their stories have been memorialized in novels, films, and other art, but artist Andrea Arroyo has chosen a different way to draw attention to the women of Juarez.

“As I thought about the theme, I was increasingly intrigued by the idea that these women died before their full potential was realized, and that each victim may have become a modern day Joan of Arc, Marie Curie, Rosa Parks or Frida Kahlo.”

Usa: Women of Wall Street

Wall Street may seem like the ultimate boys’ club, but there are plenty of women who gained notoriety by participating in trading (including suffragist Victoria Woodhull, who opened the first female-owned brokerage). This exhibit examines their legacy, and looks to the future of women in the financial world.

"Je suis très contente d'être une femme qui reçoit le prix Goncourt", a-t-elle expliqué à la presse en arrivant devant le restaurant Drouant, où le prestigieux prix venait de lui être attribué. Danimarca: giovani musulmani violenti bloccano il concerto della cantente Medina

Denmark’s answer to Lady Gaga, decided to put on a free concert in the southern Copenhagen suburb of Ishøj, home to one of Denmark’s largest minority communities.

But Medina, whose real name is Andrea Fuentealba Valbak, didn’t get to sing more than a few notes before a hail of eggs began to rain down upon the stage. The perpetrators, reports tabloid B.T., were a gang of between 10 and 20 youngsters between the ages of 14 and 17 all ‘with an immigrant background’.

Their reason for attacking the songstress? Apart from taking exception to Medina’s hot pants and sexually suggestive song lyrics, it appears that the gang were provoked by the singer’s stage name which is also coincidentally the name of the second holiest city in Islam and the burial place of the Prophet Mohammed.

With the backing of most of the 3,000 strong audience, Medina ripped into the trouble-makers and told them that their behaviour was disrupting the concert for everyone else. But the strain took its toll, and the pop star ended up leaving the stage in tears.

Medina made no public comment after the aborted concert but her manager told B.T.  that Medina is a common in Chile, where the singer’s father originates.

Her official Facebook page received hundreds of messages of support in the wake of the egg attack, and Medina was also defended by Conservative MP Naser Khader.

operatic lesbians reign supreme in Cambellford as Laurie Tucker joins wife Adrianne Pieczonka in a luscious evening of Sapphic sopranos.

“It’s challenging at times, of course,” says Pieczonka. “My schedule takes me all over the world, but once a year we manage to find time to sing together. It’s really magical to make music with your partner.”

Choosing songs for their concert proved a little tricky for the women. There aren’t a lot of duets written for mezzo and soprano voices.

“We’ve been given carte blanche,” Pieczonka says. “We wanted to keep it light and summery, so we chose things we felt suited us: The Lakmé flower duet from Madame Butterfly, Barcarolle from Tales of Hoffman, and a big scene from the opera Norma, which is a Bel Canto piece that neither of us have performed before. It’s a really great fiery scene.”

It would be understandable if two ambitious and respected singers experienced the occasional frisson of competitiveness between them, but Tucker and Pieczonka remain stalwart fans of each other’s work, and supportive in a way that only another singer can offer.

“It’s challenging, sure, and it’s also amazing,” says Tucker. “I’m inspired by Adrianne’s singing, I always have been. I’m blessed that I get to sing with her.”

The couple met in 2004, during the Canadian Opera Company’s production of Valkyrie. Pieczonka was singing the role of Sieglinde, while Tucker stormed the stage in an army of Valkyries. They were about halfway through the rehearsal process when love struck fast and furious.

“The violins were playing, I always say,” laughs Tucker. “We dated intensely. I was living in the States at the time and she was in England. I went over for a visit and that was it.”

They married in June of 2005, and welcomed daughter Grace a year later. Life is now a busy whirlwind of parenting, travel and work, but the women are ecstatic at the opportunity to share a stage singing the music they both love – even if Tucker remains a little star struck.

“It’s occasionally nerve-wracking,” she admits, “because I keep Adrianne on a pedestal a bit. But to stand next to your partner with whom you share your life, your voices and your bodies vibrating together — how much more intimate can you get outside of the bedroom?”

The summer's Lilith '10 tour has been ruled a charity success, despite the cancellation of dates - the roving all-women concert has raised more than $500,000 for North American organizations.

The tour had a shaky start as acts like Norah Jones and Kelly Clarkson pulled out amid poor ticket sales, but organizers refused to give up on Lilith - and now charity officials are saluting the efforts of co-founder Sarah McLachlan, Mary J. Blige, the Indigo Girls and their tourmates.

Lilith '10 recently wrapped up its 23-city run and now there are plans in motion to take the concept to Australia later this year - as A Taste of Lilith.

McLachlan admits she's proud with the cash raised by the tour: "I have a moral and social responsibility as a human being to give back what I can.

"Lilith 2010 was an amazing experience for me on so many levels. It felt so great to be back out on the road and sharing the stage with so many talented women. For me, Lilith has always represented a sense of community, and that's the greatest thing I take away from these shows. To be able to create an environment where both established artists and up-and-comers can join together, learn from one another and feed off each other's energy is such a great gift."

The Lilith '10 tour contributed $200,000 to local women's charities in each of the markets with another $300,000 going to the I4C campaign.
